Akeem has an out-of-wedlock son (Jermaine Fowler), that he doesn’t know about, living in Queens. A scary general (Wesley Snipes) from a bordering country insists that his son marry one of Akeem’s daughters, which would place control of Zamunda in hostile hands.īut there’s a way out of this predicament. At the start of “Coming 2 America,” the king knows his time is short and is concerned that Prince Akeem (Murphy) doesn’t have a male heir. This includes 90-year-old James Earl Jones as the King of Zamunda, still on the throne after all these years. It further helps that, aside from Madge Sinclair, who played the Queen, all of the principal actors are alive, well and looking good. The movie takes advantage of that shared history, in a way that’s both funny and wistful, with appearances by vintage acts such as En Vogue, Salt-N-Pepa and Gladys Knight. But then, they kept liking it and, as time went on, started to love it.Īs a result, “Coming to America” (1988) has become an emblem of a cultural moment and of a happy stage of history, just as it has come to be recognized as the height of Eddie Murphy’s career. As was the case with “Love, Actually,” people liked it just fine when it came out. “Coming 2 America” is a lovable movie that’s better than the sum of its parts, thanks to the years that have passed and the accumulation of warm feeling that the 1988 original has acquired over the years.
